BEFORE THE PAPER

The Romans wrote on waxed tablets with a pointed stylus.

Papyrus

Was first manufactured in Egypt.

Prepared from the stem of a

water plant.

   

Parchment

From the name of the city of Pergamon.

Made from the prepared

Many writing materials were invented, long 

before Paper.

Stone, Clay, Wood, Bamboo,

Metal, Silk, Waxed Tables,

Papyrus, Parchment

(prepared animal skins)

have all been used.

The later invention of Paper 

by the Chinese

was a big step forward.

Chapter 3  • Paper Invention

PAPERMAKING PROCESS

1 • Cutting Bamboo

Bamboo was often used

to make paper. The bamboo

stems were cut down and tied

2 • Soaking

The bamboo was soaked

in water to soften it.

After that, it was boiled and pounded to form a mushy pulp.

3 • Vat ~ Pulp ~ Screen

A fine screen was then dipped

into the pulp, and a thin layer

of fibers would cling to the screen

4 • Drying

The Paper was pressed to remove

the water, then left to dry.

Cai Lun invents paper 

in China

under the Han Dynasty 

Emperor Ho-Ti.

Cai Lun seems to have made

his paper by mixing finely chopped mulberry bark and hemp rags with water, mashing it flat, and then

pressing out the water and

letting it dry in the sun.

For a long time the Chinese

closely guarded the

Secret of Paper Manufacturing
